Linagliptin is used to lower blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. In these patients, the body does not make enough insulin or is not able to use the produced insulin properly. Linagliptin is used in patients whose blood sugar levels cannot be adequately controlled with one oral anti-diabetic medicine. It should be taken along with a balanced diet combined with exercise. Linagliptin may be used together with other anti-diabetic medicines such as metformin, sulphonylureas (e.g. glimepiride, glipizide), empagliflozin, or insulin.

Linagliptin may cause side effects such as stuffy or runny nose, sore throat, cough, and diarrhea. Whereas, the serious side effects include low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), allergic reactions, joint pain which can be severe, a skin reaction (bullous pemphigoid), and inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis) which may be severe and can even lead to death.
